Our Proven Design Process: Clear, Collaborative, and Built Around You
When you’re planning a home, the process matters just as much as the final plans. A good process keeps you informed, prevents costly surprises, and ensures the final design feels exactly right before construction begins. At B & G Drafting, we’ve refined our process over decades to be collaborative and transparent—so you know what’s happening and why at every step.
Step 1: Initial Meeting
We begin with a dedicated, face-to-face appointment to understand your goals, ideas, and requirements. This is where you bring in anything that inspires you: sketches, magazine clippings, Pinterest boards, or notes you’ve been collecting for years. We’ll talk through your budget, timeline, lot details, and style preferences, then take detailed notes to guide the design.
Step 2: Preliminary Plans
Within about a week, we create your preliminary plan. This includes:
- Floor Layout. Room sizes, traffic flow, and general arrangement.
- Exterior Elevation. A front view of your home to give you an early sense of curb appeal.
- To-Scale Drawings. Accurate proportions to help you visualize space relationships.
The preliminary plan is your first opportunity to see your ideas on paper and start shaping them into the final version. This takes about a week to draw up.
Step 3: Revisions
Once you’ve reviewed, you can mark changes directly on the drawings. Maybe you want to adjust the kitchen size, swap bedroom locations, or add a window for better light. We encourage honest feedback and work with you to refine the design until you’re confident it’s perfect.
Step 4: Final Plans
After revisions are approved, we create the final plans—typically within five weeks. Final plans include:
- 6 Full Printed Sets. Complete with elevations, floor plans, foundation, and roof plans.
- Electrical Layout. Outlets, switches, and fixture placements for construction clarity.
- Permit Sets. For jurisdictions that require them, or for your records if not.
- Digital PDF Copy. Easily shared with contractors and saved for future reference.
Every final plan is code-compliant, build-ready, and protected by copyright. It is fully yours.
