How to Get Started

Getting Started with Your Home Design
Starting a home design project can feel like a big step, but with the right preparation and guidance, it’s also exciting. At B & G Drafting, we make the early stages as simple and stress-free as possible—so you can focus on your vision instead of worrying about what to do next.
We want to walk you through exactly what you need to bring, how to prepare, and what happens once we meet.
- Step 1:
Gather Your Ideas
The more you can show us, the better we can understand your vision. You don’t need a finished concept—just pieces of inspiration. This prep work helps us see the home through your eyes:
Sketches and Notes
Have any hand-drawn layouts, floor plan doodles, or quick measurements? They can give us a starting point.
Photos and Clippings
Feel free to provide images of kitchens, bathrooms, exterior styles, or layouts you love.
Must-Haves and Wish Lists
Bring a written list of features you can’t live without, plus the things you’d love to have if possible.
- Step 2:
Collect Property Information (if available)
Even the best ideas need to fit the lot they’ll be built on. Bringing accurate property details ensures we can design within the right boundaries from day one.
Survey or Plat Map
We account for all property lines, easements, and dimensions.
Zoning Information
If available, bring any guidelines you’ve received from your city, county, or HOA.
Site Photos
Pictures of your lot from multiple angles can help us visualize placement and orientation.
Topography or Grading Notes
If your property has slopes or unique terrain features, these are important for planning.
- Step 3:
Schedule Your First Appointment
We work by appointment to give each client the time and attention their project deserves. When you book your meeting:
- A deposit will be required up front which covers the consultation and initial preliminary design work.
- We’ll reserve two full hours to discuss your project without rushing.
- You’ll meet directly with the person designing your plans—not a salesperson or go-between.
- We’ll take detailed notes, review your materials, and ask questions to clarify your goals.
By the end of this meeting, we’ll have a solid direction for your preliminary plans.
- Step 4:
Know What Happens Next
After the initial meeting, we’ll begin creating your preliminary plan. You’ll get:
- A scaled floor layout showing room arrangements and sizes.
- An exterior elevation to give you a visual sense of curb appeal.
You’ll have time to review and request changes, and we’ll work with you until the design feels right before moving on to final plans.
- Our Promise
Our Promise to Clients
Our process works because it’s centered on making you comfortable and confident from the first conversation.
